A raw, graphic portrayal of a dysfunctional family. The fact that it is set in a well-described bygone era—1950s America—only adds to the story’s realistic flavor. No doubt, some will relate to the Berndt family dynamics while others will be shocked by them. Fortunately, there are liberal doses of comic relief that help take the edge off the main character’s desperate struggle. So well written I found it easy to forget I was reading a work of fiction—Professor Gary Andrews, psychologist
I started Lance’s story late last night. I read until I fell asleep and finished it this morning. Could not put it down. Oh, my goodness, I did not want Lance’s story to end. Thank you for a wonderful book—Cherrie James
This book grabbed me from Page 1 and never let go. This is a no-holds-barred description of a dysfunctional family and a boy trying to survive his childhood. One incredible scene after the other. Hard to believe it's fiction. The author's style is very distinctive. Looking forward to the sequel —Amy Rudisill
This is a book that will stay with you forever. It’s sad, funny, and heartbreaking. This book is the best hard read I have ever had. I will read it again when I’m ready. It is that powerful—Sally C.
I had three books I started reading. Once I started reading Arthur; The Struggle Continues this was my go to book of choice. Its a walk thru a dark and lonely path of young life that we sometimes forget exists regardless of the time period. I can't wait to read the next chapter of Arthur's struggles and how he manages to survive these challenging years.--Dee Kay
If you love dogs, this is a must read. If you are disinterested in dogs, this is a highly recommended read. Lance is a story about a rescued dog who had been abused for years, masterfully told with dry, self- deprecating humor and honest self-reflection. The author has captured the indomitable spirit of this semi-feral border collie to the point where I felt that I knew both Lance and Walter well by the time I finished the book. The author tells this true story with great detail about Lance’s behavioral traits while often drawing comparisons to his own bumpy adolescent experience. This book is charming, but it is a whole lot more than that. It is an inspirational story wonderfully told. I highly recommend it. —Barbara Cooney.
